What is melasma, which is different from blemishes?

Melasma is not merely a problem where excess melanin is produced, leading to skin pigmentation.

It involves pigment cells called melanocytes becoming overactive in the deep layers of the skin,

and the melanin produced by these cells spreads widely and repeatedly,

infiltrating even into the dermis, resulting in a complex long-term pigmentation disorder.

In particular, external stimuli such as UV radiation or hormonal changes stimulate melanocytes,

and during this process, subtle inflammatory reactions and vascular factors within the skin act together,

characterized by pigment spreading in a blurry, widespread pattern rather than simple spot-like forms.

Histologically, while the number of melanocytes is within the normal range,

the size of the cells and dendrites, which are the dendritic structures, significantly increase,

leading to more melanin being delivered further to surrounding cells.

Additionally, in some patients, microcapillary dilation or flushing reactions are observed in the melasma area,

and in such cases, it is sometimes classified as vascular melasma.

Melasma is less a disease in itself and more a result of skin reacting easily and

emerging from various stimuli in a structurally unstable state.

Therefore, treatment that corrects its causes and structure, rather than simple pigment removal, is crucial.

While dual toning is also necessary for general pigmentation disorders, it is especially essential for melasma, where conventional toning alone is insufficient.
