What is melasma, not just a blemish?

Melasma cannot be viewed simply as a phenomenon where excessive melanin pigment is produced and deposited in the skin.

In the deeper dermis of the skin, pigment-forming cells called melanocytes become excessively activated.

The melanin pigment produced by these cells tends to repeatedly spread over a large area.

This ultimately reaches the dermis, taking on the form of a complex pigmentation disorder that persists for a long time.

In particular, external factors such as UV exposure or hormonal changes cause further stimulation of melanocytes.
